National Day of Prayer Will Have Texas Christians Praying for Defeat of the 'Bathroom Bill'

Today is the National Day of Prayer, and members of the clergy and parishioners from across the state are gathering at the State Capitol today to pray that the Legislature kills that so called 'Bathroom Bill,' which would restrict public restroom use by transgender individuals, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Rev. Kyle Walker with Faith Presbyterian Church says supporters have tried to paint support for the Bathroom Bill as a religious issue, but he and his parishioners feel that opposing the bill is the Christian thing to do.

"There is a lot of change, it is a time when people may feel that their religious viewpoint is under attack," he said.  "But this is about equal rights, and people being treated like human beings."

Rev. Walker says many Fundamentalists have made it appear that all Christians oppose LGBT rights, and that is not true.

"We love our neighbors, we honor God and we respect all people equally," he said.  "That's what prayer should be all about."

The National Day of Prayer event is expected to counter the impression being given by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, when he recently called for 'one million Christians' to speak out in support of the Bathroom Bill, that all faith groups support the bill.

The future of the bill is uncertain, and House Speaker Joe Straus is still concerned about the impact it may have on business development. The Senate overwhelmingly passed the Bathroom Bill last month.
