City Today Begins Enforcing 'Don't Block the Box' Intersection Safety Program

Start watching where you stop today.

The San Antonio Police Department today starts enfocrcing the experimental program called 'Don't Block of Box.'  It calls for ticketing drivers who stop at stop lights with their nose in the intersection, or drive into a congested intersection and end up with their tail hanging out in the intersection when the light turns red.

City officials say the 'Don't Block the Box' effort will stress the importance of allowing pedestrians and bicyclists the opportunity to safety cross streets without having to walk or pedal around cars that are halfway in the intersection, covering up the cross walk.

It also makes cross traffic flow more smoothly because the cars will be able to avoid barriers in the intersection.

Ten experimental 'Don't Block the Box' intersections have been designated and are marked for the campaign.  If the program is successful in helping traffic move ahead, more will be designated.

Fines can run up to $200.
