With Temperatures Rising, Don't Have 2017 be the Year You Spent Fiesta in the ER

With temperatures predicted to be into the nineties during the rest of Fiesta week, Dr. Sal Abrams has some ideas on how you can avoid becoming his guest for Fiesta, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Nothing personal, but Abrams doesn't want to find you enjoying his hospitality, as director of the Emergency Room at Southwest General Hospital.

He says the heat is something many Fiesta goers aren't used to and may not plan for.

"A lot of the times with the heat and the activity, walking and so on, we forget to drink enough fluid and electrolytes," he said.Dr. Abrams says it doesn't have to be a fancy 'Fiesta' hat, but a hat is critical, along with sunscreen, for Fiesta afternoons.

He says the heat will also have unintended consequences, and you should take special care with the food you eat.

"With the heat, some of the foods, especially chicken salad, potato salad and stuff, can get toxins such as e-coli and other bacteria."

He says walking is part of Fiesta, whether its walking to the parades or around NIOSA, and leave those heels at home.  He says sandals make far more sense.

Something else Dr. Abrams says can cause Fiesta health issues is noise.  He says some small earplugs or earbuds could help protect you from unexpected noises

.Of course, a designated driver is critical, as Fiesta drunk driving arrests are way up and are expected to peak over the coming long Fiesta weekend.

One thing you can't protect yourself from, in the crowds of an event like NIOSA, is viruses.  He says they're going around, and there's not much you can do about it.

"With this crowd sometimes, safety is impossible to achieve," he said.  "That's just a risk you have to take."
