A scare at County Line Elementary School in New Braunfels today, as an eight year old girl opened her book bag for class and found a handgun in the bag, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
Police say the girl immediately told her teacher that a gun was in her bag and the teacher called police. Officers say they don’t think any other kids in the class ever saw the gun.
It turns out the parent of the child admitted to putting the gun into the bag during a recent move and then forgetting about it.
The parent will face a minor misdemeanor charge of Making a Firearm Accessible to a Minor, which is like a traffic ticket.
Police praised the teacher and the school district for their calm handling of the situation, and stressed that gun owners need to be aware of where they put their firearms.
