UPDATE: DPS Trooper Shot While Investigating Prowler at His Home in Kirby

An off duty Texas State Trooper is hospitalized with minor wounds after he was accidentally shot while he was investigating a suspicious person hanging around his home in Kirby overnight, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Police were called to the 5100 block of Tom Stafford, which is just south of Binz-Engleman, about midnight on a report of gunfire.

Officers were told that the off duty trooper, whose name was not released, was told of a suspicious person hanging around his home.

He put on his bulletproof vest and went outside to check out the person, when he was immediately attacked by the man..who tried to force his way into the house.

The man and the Trooper struggled, and the Trooper was accidentally shot when his service weapon discharged.

Fortunately, the bulletproof vest absorbed the impact of the bullet.

The Trooper was not seriously hurt, and is under observation at San Antonio Military Medical Center.

The suspect ran away and remains on the loose.
