Port San Antonio and the Local YMCA today are co-hosting a pair of Type II Diabetes prevention information sessions, in hopes of attracting participants for a year-long wellness and support program.
The sessions run from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5:30-7 p.m. at Port San Antonio's Mabry Conference Center at 102 Mabry Dr. on SAn Antonio's south side.
This is the third year the YMCA has offered the 12-month diabetes prevention and management workshops. says Sarah Tabbutt, the YMCA's local healthy living director.
" 'Y-USA,' which is our national 'Y,' found it very necessary to get it started here in San Antonio so that we can prevent as much as possible or delay the onset of Type II Diabetes," Tabbutt says.
Attendees can see if they qualify by bringing recent blood lab reports, she says. "or if they don't have any of that blood work, they take a seven-question questionnaire and, depending on their risk factors, they qualify that route, as well."
Those risk factors include family history, height and weight, body mass index, age, and activity level, says Tabbutt.
Applicants who qualify are eligible to enroll free of charge in a three-phase, 12-month diabetes awareness and prevention program that includes informal wellness coaching and support group sessions.
