A Navy officer from Helotes has been caught up in what has been called the 'Fat Leonard' scandal which has been embroiling the Navy over the past several months, 1200 WOAI news reports.
Lt. Commander Mario Herrera of Helotes has been arrested on bribery charges.Court documents obtained by 1200 WOAI news reveal that Herrera is accused of accepting travel, lavish meals, and prostitutes in exchange for steering Navy ships to ports run by a Malaysian businessman known as Fat Leonard.
The Navy alleges that Fat Leonard overcharged for port services.
The indictment charges that Herrera is a former lieutenant to the Commander of Navy Forces in Japan, and as such would have input on port matters.Herrera is the 12th Navy officer to be charged in the scheme.
He will stand trial in San Diego.
