Veteran SAISD School Board Member Charged With Taking Bribes

A veteran San Antonio ISD School Board member has been arrested on bribery charges, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

The FBI says Olga Hernandez, 66, was arrested by agents this morning and charged with accepting items of value from insrance brokerages in exchange for influencing the SAISD's insurance services contracts.

The indictment claims that between March of 2008 and May of 2015, Hernandez sonspired with executives of the insurance brokerage The Mullen Pension and Benefits Group to accept cash, jewelry, and cash in exchange for supporting the Mullen Group's bids to see health insurance to school district employees.

She is charged with depriving taxpayers of honest services, and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted on all charges.

Superintendent Pedro Martinez released a statement on behalf of the district:

   “We are very saddened and disturbed by this news. Since I have been  here working with the Board, they have demonstrated a commitment to act  with the utmost integrity, to focus on our students and build trust with  the community. We are waiting to find out more information, and will be  following it closely.”
