Three Suspects Arrested in Spring Branch Shooting

San Antonio Police today arrested three people, two men and a woman, in connection with the shooting of a mail carrier in Spring Branch on Saturday, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Chief William McManus says the three were involved in an incident on Monday where they are alleged to have fired at a State Trooper while driving the wrong way down US 281 at Bulverde Road, and in the incident yesterday, where they allegedly fired a shot at police in the parking lot of the Jim's Restaurant at Broadway and Loop 410, and then escaped to North Star Mall, prompting a major police search of the mall and its parking garages.

McManus says detectives traced the three to a low budget motel at Roosevelt and Steves, just south of downtown.

"Our SWAT team did a fantastic job taking these individuals into custody without incident," he said.He says because they had escaped from two dragnets, the decision was made early today to use SWAT to bring them down.

"We were afraid there was going to be a situation where there would be a violent encounter, based on what had happened in the past."The three were turned over to U.S. Marshals.

They will be prosecuted for aggravated assault of a postal worker, a federal office, and stealing the U.S. Mail.Officials haven't released a motive for stealing the mail, but there has been speculation that it was an attempt to steal income tax information for identity theft purposes.
