Two Alarm Fire Damages Former College Building

A building on the former campus of the Baptist University of the Americas was badly damaged in a two alarm fire overnight, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Firefighters were called to the location on I-35 South at Navajo, about  11PM.

When they arrived, they found that a fire that started in a pile of trash left by construction workers had spread into the building.

The fire caused significant damage to the building, spread to the attic, and also sparked a grass fire.

At one point, more than two dozen fire units were on the scene battling the flames and trying to prevent them from spreading in the gusty winds.

Nobody was hurt, and arson investigators are on the scene.

The Baptist University of the Americas was located in the picturesque campus of red brick 'colonial style' buildings, which is a landmark on I-35 on the south side, for decades.  The BUA moved to another location nearby last year, and the campus is being renovated into a retail and residential center.

The trash pile where the fire started was left by the construction workers doing the renovation.
