Castro Begins Process that Could Lead to Trump's Impeachment

U.S. Rep Joaquin Castro (D-San Antonio) is taking a step he says could lead to the impeachment of President Trump, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Castro has filed a resolution which calls on the U.S. Justice Department to appoint an independent counsel to investigate 'whether President Trump or his staff directed, or knowingly permitted, United States Customs and Border Protection actions which violated judicial orders designed to stay the January 27, 2017 travel ban executive order.'

Castro says the allegation is that the White House ordered Customs agents at airports to continue to block the entry of individuals from the seven nations covered in the President's immigration man, even after a federal judge in Seattle had ordered the order blocked.

Castro says if the independent counsel determines that the President did order or know about any illegal actions by the Customs Service, he should be 'censured' by Congress.  Then, if the President commits any more 'unconstitutional' acts, 'Congress should take steps to remove him from office.'

"The Constitution established our government’s system of checks and balances to protect against power grabs. We in Congress are sworn to defend the separation of powers, and I urge all my colleagues to join me in calling for this investigation," Castro said.

He said he 'hopes President Trump obeyed the law,' but if he didn't, it is up to Congress to take action.
