Somerset ISD Teacher Named Among Nation's Best Educators

Today may have been a good day for you, but it was a fantastic day for Amber Simpson.

The teacher at Barrera Elementary School in the Somerset ISD today was awarded the Milken Award for Education, which is considered to 'Oscars of Education.

The award was presented personally by Gov. Greg Abbott, who talked about the challenges that he has faced, starting with the accident in 1984 that left him with a broken back, and in a wheelchair for life.

"Listen, you are going to face tough challenges," Abbott told hundreds of students, teachers, and administators gathered in the school auditorium.  "But just like I overcame my challenge and went on to succeed, so can you."

The Texas Education Commissioner was also on hand, along with a number of local and regional dignitaries.

And Simpson doesn't just get a certificate.

Winning the Milken Award will place her into an exclusive category of educators who are called on to advise top government officials on national and state education policy. And, she also collected a $25,000 check, which isn't bad, either.
