Out of nowhere, artificial intelligence whistleblowers, politicians, and various CEOs are all calling for stringent crackdowns on AI, as the battle over regulations ramps up on Capitol Hill. Warnings have been cast from many, saying the technology is growing out of control, and guardrails must be implemented. It has been the hot topic of debate for the last week, with Congress getting a chance to question Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on the issue on Tuesday.

When asked about the growing concerns over artificial intelligence, Sec. Bessent said AI companies can "stop any time they want to." Which among all the fearmongering and all the doom ideology surrounding it, that is among the most logical of takes on the issue. These companies can stop whenever they want and draw a line but are choosing not to. So, now, the debate will rage over who can control the expansion of the new technology.

In short, we are in uncharted waters with this entire situation. Never in American history have we been presented with such a technology, outside of potentially the nuclear bomb as part of the Manhattan Project. Keeping that technology from spiraling out of control is a tough thing and keeping it out of nefarious hands is an even taller order.

Adriel Gonzalez of the Daily Caller says the question of who bears the responsibility for these regulatory actions is a tricky one.

"We have private and public sector kind of intersecting...we have the private sector asking for regulation from the public sector," he says.

An Anthropic AI employee recently resigned over the issue of exploding AI, saying OpenAI and Anthropic are not "acting responsibly," adding they are racing to "self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives."

Now, the AI race is critical for numerous reasons. It helps Americans in their daily life, it helps with our national security, and most importantly, it keeps up ahead of China in the realm of innovation. Simply put, we have to keep building out AI if we want to continue prospering as a nation. But as with basically every issue in American politics, both sides of this issue are dug into extreme sands, almost unwilling to find a middle ground.

"You have parties saying this is a free market, let the companies regulate themselves...if they create something, they ought to control it, and they bear the responsibility," says Gonzalez. "But then we have parties saying this is posing a real issue, and this is a new frontier."

Some have proposed kill switches in the system, some have opposed shutting down systems entirely to get a proper hold on things, any and every idea has been tossed out thus far. None of which have taken hold.

But this is after all a free market, a free country, and complicating such things with government regulations is far from popular among the American people. So, striking the proper balance is the key.

"We do not want to stifle competition...we have to find where to keep American innovation at its height, while not putting anyone at risk," Gonzalez says.

This is just the beginning. If you were sick of hearing about AI already, buckle up. It will be the main topic of discussion heading into the midterms.
