1 Israel Says Iran Launched Missiles Toward It After Strikes On Beirut
Israel struck Beirut's southern suburbs without warning yesterday, killing at least two people and wounding up to 20 others, just days after a U.S.-brokered Lebanon-Israel ceasefire agreement went into effect and despite a direct U.S. request not to attack Lebanon's capital. Israel said the strikes targeted Hezbollah command centers in retaliation for the militant group firing at northern Israel. Iran's parliament speaker warned that U.S. and Israeli assets in the region were now legitimate targets. A senior U.S. official said Washington "was not surprised" by the attack, noting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had said for some time he would retaliate against any Hezbollah attacks on Israel. Hezbollah has rejected the Washington deal entirely, and Iran wants any final agreement to include an end to all fighting in Lebanon as a condition of its peace negotiations with the U.S.
2 Raman Overtakes Platt As Counting Continues In LA Mayoral Race
California's two most closely watched primary races remained unresolved this weekend as vote counting continued, but new results produced significant movement in both contests. In the Los Angeles mayor's race, reality TV personality Spencer Pratt's lead over City Councilwoman Nithya Raman continued to shrink with every new ballot dump from the L.A. County Registrar. After Pratt held a nearly 6-percent advantage on Thursday, his lead vanished over the weekend, and Raman now holds the lead by just a few thousand votes. In the governor's race, CBS News projected over the weekend that former HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra has advanced to November's general election. Former Fox News host and Republican Steve Hilton is currently in second place but is being pressed by billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer. Counties continue releasing ballot updates through mid-June, meaning neither race is expected to be called for days.
3 Search For Shooters Continues After 12 Wounded At Outdoor Festival In Ohio
Twelve people were shot and wounded, two critically, when gunfire broke out near the Old West End Festival, a community celebration in Toledo, Ohio Saturday evening. The shooting was reported around 5:37 p.m. Toledo Police Deputy Chief Joseph Heffernan said investigators believe there were at least two shooters who were "probably" firing at each other, with the victims caught in the crossfire. The Old West End Festival is a beloved annual event celebrating one of Toledo's most historic neighborhoods. Deputy Chief Heffernan added, "This is a perfect example of when bullets start flying, they can go anywhere. They can strike anybody."
