San Antonio's new fire chief takes office today, following the City Council's unanimous approval on Thursday. Council members voted 11-0 to confirm the appointment of Valerie Frausto as chief of the San Antonio Fire Department. Frausto joined the department in 2000 and has served as a firefighter, paramedic, fire marshal, and interim deputy chief. More than 100 of San Antonio's 1,800 firefighters are women, but Frausto is the first one to rise to the rank of chief.
