Texas Lawmakers, GOP Executives At Odds Over Roberson Death Row Case

Some Texas lawmakers are at odds with Republicans in the state's executive branch over the staying of a death row inmate's execution. Robert Roberson was scheduled to be executed a week ago Thursday, but members of a legislative committee issued a subpoena for Roberson to testify before them the following Monday. The Texas Supreme Court allowed the subpoena to proceed, granting Roberson a 90-day reprieve. Gov. Greg Abbott says only the governor can grant clemency in a capital case, including a 30-day reprieve. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton says the subpoena violates the separation of powers.
