State lawmakers reportedly may consider legalizing casino gambling in Texas in order to offset reduced property taxes. Last year the state raised $82 billion in revenue from the nation's sixth-highest property tax rates. To replace that amount, the state sales tax would have to be more than doubled. As an alternative to that politically unpopular idea, the legislature may consider legalizing casino resorts, which the Texas Hispanic Policy Foundation says is supported by nearly 60% of Texans.
