A ruling from the Supreme Court of Texas says the operator of the state's electric grid is protected from civil lawsuits by sovereign immunity. Friday's 5-4 opinion means the Electric Reliability Council of Texas can't be held liable for deaths, injuries, and damage caused by the winter storm of 2021. The storm strained the power grid to the extent that ERCOT cut the power to millions of homes and businesses to keep the grid from collapsing. Billions in financial losses resulted, more than 200 people died, and thousands of Texans sued ERCOT.
