SAPD Officers Charged With Murder After Fatally Shooting Woman

Three San Antonio police officers are being charged with murder after they shot and killed a woman while she was inside her southwest side apartment.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus says the three officers were taken into custody just hours after Friday's shooting. They have since been released released on bond.

McManus said 46-year-old Melissa Perez had been experiencing a mental health crisis and had a hammer in her hand when police shot her through a patio window and door.

"The shooting officers' actions were not consistent with SAPD's policy and training, and they placed themselves in a situation where they used deadly force, which was not reasonable given all the circumstances," said McManus. "This event does not accurately reflect the high level of dedication and commitment demonstrated by our over 2,500 officers, nor should it undermine the extensive and advanced training we provide to ensure the health and the safety of both our officers and community that they serve."
