Paper Vehicle License Tags Outlawed In Texas As Of 2025

Paper car tags are on their way out in Texas. Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill into law on Monday that eliminates paper license plates in the state and requires car dealers to issue metal plates when a vehicle is sold. The House and Senate both overwhelmingly passed House Bill 718 in response to problems connected to fraudulent paper plates in Texas, which are hard to tell from legitimate paper tags. The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles is required to come up with rules for implementing the new law by December 1st, 2024.
