The Atlantic hurricane season officially starts today. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is forecasting 12 to 17 named storms with five to nine of those becoming hurricanes. The National Hurricane Center says a system in the eastern Gulf of Mexico has a low chance of becoming the season's first hurricane. The Atlantic hurricane season lasts until the end of November.
