Texas House Votes To Impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton

The Texas House has voted 121-23 in favor of impeachment of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, with Paxton now suspended from office pending a Senate trial. The Republican-led House General Investigating Committee filed twenty articles of impeachment against Paxton, with allegations ranging from disregard of official duty to bribery and obstruction of justice. The impeachment proceedings come after a months-long secret investigation into Paxton, which started after the A-G asked the state legislature to approve the use of public funds for a more than three-million-dollar settlement with former employees. The employees were fired after accusing Paxton of abusing his office to benefit a donor, allegations that were repeated by investigators.

The matter will now go to the Senate.

Following the vote, Paxton said, "I am beyond grateful to have the support of millions of Texans who recognize that what we just witnessed is illegal, unethical, and profoundly unjust. I look forward to a quick resolution in the Texas Senate, where I have full confidence the process will be fair and just."
