The U.S. is offering another show of support for Taiwan - and angering the Chinese government in the process.
On Tuesday, the White House announced it would hold trade talks with Taiwan in early fall.
The negotiations could be the first step in establishing formal ties with Taiwan, something the U.S. has avoided before now.
The move drew an immediate response from Beijing, which considers Taiwan to be Chinese territory and vowed to "safeguard its sovereignty".
