The White House is accusing China of overreacting to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan this week.
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters the overreaction was expected. He called it part of China's longstanding effort to "change the status quo" with Taiwan.
China has been firing missiles into the sea near Taiwan as part of ongoing "military exercises."
Beijing considers the independently-governed Taiwan to be part of China.
