Federal Judge Strikes Down New Texas Voter Residency Requirement Law

A federal judge is voiding a new state law tightening residency requirements for Texas voters. A U.S. District Judge in Austin ruled on Tuesday that the law is "unconstitutionally vague" and violates the First Amendment. The law required people who register to vote using a P.O. box to provide proof of a home address. The legislature passed the bill in order to protect election integrity. The League of United Latin American Citizens and the nonprofit Voto Latino filed suit to stop the law from taking effect on September 1st.
