Governor Greg Abbott says the State of Texas should not have to pay for the education of undocumented immigrants. During an interview earlier this week, the governor said he is planning to revisit the Supreme Court decision in Plyler v. Doe, which requires states to fund the public education of all students, including those that are not legal residents. Abbott says the federal government should foot the bill for educating undocumented students, since another Supreme Court ruling prohibits the state from passing immigration laws that undermine federal policy. The governor claims those two decisions violate the Constitution.
