The Harris County Sheriff's Office is reporting the death of an off-duty deputy in a shootout on Thursday night. Deputy Darren Almendarez confronted three black men who were reportedly stealing the catalytic converter from his truck in the parking lot of a grocery store on FM 1960 at Aldine Westfield.

One of the suspects shot Almendarez, who died at the hospital. The deputy had also wounded two of the suspects. One is in critical condition, and the other is in stable condition. The third suspect got away.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner is asking people to pray for the family of Deputy Almendarez. Turner says Almendarez's death last night is extremely saddening and senseless because he was going with his family to the grocery store.

"Deputy Darren Almendarez lost his life while answering the call to serve and protect his fellow Texans, and this tragedy is a heartbreaking reminder of the sacrifices our law enforcement officers make both on and off duty," said Governor Greg Abbott. "The State of Texas is ready to provide all resources necessary to bring justice to the family and loved ones of Deputy Almendarez. I ask that Texans join Cecilia and me in prayer for Deputy Almendarez's family and for the continued safety of all of our law enforcement officers across the Lone Star State."
