Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is investigating GoFundMe over its closure of a Canadian “Freedom Convoy” fundraiser. Paxton says GoFundMe may have violated the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act after it pulled the fundraiser last week. The AG vows he's going to make sure Texans who donated their money know where it goes instead of be diverted to another cause. GoFundMe says the money was pulled because of reports from Canadian authorities the convoy became violent. The website says donors can ask for a refund in the next couple weeks or the money would be given to charities chosen by Freedom Convoy organizers.
“GoFundMe’s response to an anti-mandate, pro-liberty movement should ring alarm bells to anyone using the donation platform and, more broadly, any American wanting to protect their constitutional rights,” Paxton said. “Many Texans donated to this worthy cause. I am acting to protect Texas consumers so that they know where their hard-earned money is going, rather than allowing GoFundMe to divert money to another cause without the consent of Texas citizens. I will get to the bottom of this deceitful action.”
