Austin Police To Increase Downtown Staffing On New Year's Eve

There will be an increased presence of Austin police officers downtown on New Year's Eve. Chief Joseph Chacon says the department plans to "overstaff" the area, while ensuring other parts of the city still have an ample amount of officers. Chacon noted that the police department is experiencing similar staffing shortages to the ones hitting restaurants and businesses. The chief's announcement comes one day after the City said that Sixth Street would remain closed to vehicle traffic.
