Former "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett goes to trial on Monday on charges he lied to Chicago police about being a victim of a racist and homophobic attack nearly three years ago.

On January 29, 2019, Smollett told police he was attacked by two men around 2 a.m. while he was out grabbing food.

The actor said the men used racist and homophobic slurs, wrapped a rope around his neck, and poured an "unknown" substance on him.

Subsequent investigations, however, reportedly showed Smollett staged the attack with the help of two brothers he met at a local gym.

If convicted, Smollett could face from one to three years in prison.
