The Justice Department has asked a federal judge to stop Texas from enacting its controversial new abortion law.

The DOJ filed an emergency motion Tuesday night, arguing the the law prevents women from "exercising their constitutional rights".

Last week, Attorney General Merrick Garland called the law "clearly unconstitutional" and promised to sue.

The law bans all abortions after roughly six weeks, and also allows private citizens to sue abortion clinics and others who help a woman obtain an abortion outside that time frame.
