A new bill is being passed by the state Senate that limits how students learn about current events and historic racism. The Senate made changes to the bill after hours of debate and now it returns to the Texas House. The House can either accept the changes or call for a conference committee made up of members from both chambers to figure out the differences. The Senate-approved version takes away requirements of teaching matters like the Federal Civil Rights Act of 1964, the 13th, 14th and 19th amendments to the Constitution. Educators worry the legislation will change how teachers can engage students in hard but important conversations about current American events.
