The Texas Legislature's 87th session starts today in Austin. The top issues are expected to be the coronavirus pandemic, the state budget, the state's potential takeover of the Austin police ever since the city cut the force's budget, and redistricting, which happens every ten-years. GOP Representative Dan Phelan is expected to become the next Speaker of the House. Pandemic precautions will be in place at the Capitol when the 140-day session starts at noon.
