Educators Ask State Not To Cut School Funding Amid Declining Enrollment

Texas educators and advocates are asking the state not to cut funding for districts experiencing pandemic-related declines in enrollment. The state funds schools based on their attendance, including both in-person and virtual teaching. Enrollment in many districts has dropped during the pandemic, so the state agreed to fund districts for the first 18 weeks of the school year based on projected attendance instead of actual head count. But the reprieve is scheduled to end in January, and school administrators are concerned. Education Commissioner Mike Morath says there are no plans to extend the reprieve.
