A former Texas death row inmate is suing for compensation after he was declared innocent last year. Alfred Brown was sentenced to die for fatally shooting a Houston police officer in 2003. After a trial judge established Brown's innocence last year, he applied for compensation from a state fund that pays 80-thousand-dollars for every year wrongfully spent in prison. But the Houston police union, the officer's widow, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton took exception to the finding of innocence, and the state is refusing to pay Brown. The legal battle that resulted is now before the Texas Supreme Court.
