The City of San Antonio has been selected as a finalist to host the U.S. Space Command Headquarters.
“Military City, USA is as patriotic a city as they come, with robust defense, education, training, research, and cybersecurity infrastructure at the ready,” said Sen. Cornyn. “Texans have already demonstrated outsized success in the military and have led the way in space exploration. San Antonio would be a natural fit for the U.S. Space Command to take advantage of the vast resources and skilled workforce we have in the Lone Star State.”
San Antonio is one of six finalists, whittled down from a list of more than 50 competing U.S. cities. The U.S. Air Force will now work with the City of San Antonio to further evaluate the location and expects to make a final decision in January.
"The Department of the Air Force will find no better location for the U.S. Space Command than Port San Antonio. Not only does the state of Texas have the resources, universities, and human capital necessary to support the Space Command, but we are also enriched by our long-standing and celebrated tradition of military service and innovation in Texas," said Governor Greg Abbott. "I strongly urge the Department of the Air Force to choose Port San Antonio as the home of the U.S. Space Command."
The other finalists include Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Patrick AFB in Brevard County, Florida; Offutt AFB in Bellevue, Nebraska; Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama; and Colorado Springs. Space Command is provisionally headquartered at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs for the next six years until the U.S. Air Force establishes a permanent base.
