San Antonio's City Council has approved a nearly $3 billion budget. It includes an $8 million increase for policing. And while that's a defeat for groups that want to defund police, City Manager Erik Walsh says they will work to reform law enforcement.
Anti-police activists say they're disappointed by the City Council's decision not to cut or divert funding to the San Antonio Police Department.
City leaders say about 79% of police funding is untouchable because it's tied to the collective bargaining agreement. An activist called the council's vote an act of "blatant disrespect to the people."
The spotlight now will be on the contract with the police union, which some feel allows bad cops to remain on the force. Negotiations begin this January.
