A new survey reveals the effect of the COVID-19 shutdown on the economies of cities around the state. Community Impact reports the survey conducted this summer by Austin-based nonprofit Texas Municipal League focuses on areas of weakness in Texas cities' economic outlook. Many cities, large and small, say they are suffering general revenue losses from lower sales tax collection, on average 13% less than prior to COVID-19. The cities surveyed say their budgets are feeling the effect of a sharp drop in activity in sectors such as hospitality and tourism including hotel occupancy. More than 550 municipalities responded to the survey.
