1 The Dems Raise The Curtain On Their Virtual Convention
The nation's first virtual political convention is officially underway – the setting, of course, due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. By the end of the four-night event, former VP Joe Biden will officially be the Democratic presidential nominee. All segments at the convention's first night were pre-recorded. Among the highlights, actress Eva Longoria, opening the convention, who said the coming events will be about uniting America. A group of everyday Americans then read the Preamble to the Constitution and a multi-cultural choir performed the National Anthem. But really, it really doesn’t matter who spoke last night – and there were several interesting speeches – because former First Lady Michelle Obama literally stole the show as the evening’s headliner. Her impassioned remarks included her argument that that President Trump is "clearly in over his head." She called Biden a “profoundly decent man” who will "tell the truth and trust science."
2 Postmaster General To Testify Before House Committee Next Week
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy will testify before a committee next week. As we told you before, the hearing in front of the House Oversight and Reform Committee is set for August 24th. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney leads the panel. She says in a letter that DeJoy will be questioned on the "sweeping operational and organizational changes at the Postal Service." President Trump maintains he has not ordered the U.S. Postmaster General to slow down the mail ahead of November's elections. Trump told reporters he wants the mail to speed-up. He argued that he wants the Postal Service to operate properly.
3 Dr. Birx: School Reopenings Should be 'Tailored to Each and Every Community'
White House coronavirus taskforce member Dr. Deborah Birx says school re-opening procedures should be "tailored to each and every community." Speaking in Little Rock, Arkansas, Dr. Birx said safety should come first and parents in every district should being given the option of virtual education. She also said she wished the U.S. lockdown back in March and April looked like that of Italy, but she added that "Americans don't react well to that kind of prohibition." She stressed that behavioral change is important, beginning with wearing masks and limiting capacity at restaurants and bars. Meanwhile, U.S. companies may bring thousands of workers back to the country because of the pandemic. Tim Bryan, CEO of worldwide IT company GalaxE [[galaxy]] Solutions, says in many countries where outsourcing is big business, they have built large office parks with state of the art equipment to facilitate thousands of workers supporting American companies. But the advent of Covid, has made a lot of companies rethink their opportunities with remote workers.
