1 Trump: Violent Crime Rising In "Far Left Cities"
President Trump claims violent crime is spiraling in what he calls "far left cities" that are run by Democrats and "radical libs." Hosting an event with law enforcement officials at the White House, Trump also accused leading Democrats of favoring efforts to defund police. Trump said Chicago, which saw at least 60 shootings over the weekend, including 13 deadly incidents, is "worse than Afghanistan." He also said police are generally treated very unfairly and argued that "radical politicians are waging war on innocent Americans." The event also featured some citizens who have had positive experience with law enforcement officers. He called his administration pro-safety, pro-police and anti-crime. Trump argued that things would be worse under former VP Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, who he again referred to as "Sleepy Joe." Along the way, Trump also criticized the painting of "Black Lives Matter" on a street outside Trump Tower in New York City. He suggested city officials “should have more important things to be concerned about.”
2 White House: Not Doing "Opposition Research" On Fauci
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany is rejecting claims that the Trump administration is doing "opposition research" on Dr. Anthony Fauci. There've been numerous reports that the White House has been trying to discredit Fauci, the nation's top expert on infectious diseases. McEnany noted Fauci's past praise of President Trump's response to the coronavirus. Still, Fauci has recently issued strong warnings about virus surges over much of the U.S. – something unflattering for the President. For his part, at a separate event, Trump is still attributing coronavirus surges to increased testing. Reporters pressed Trump during a White House event and he insisted that the U.S. mortality rate is relatively low, compared to other nations. The deadly virus is again surging over much of the U.S., including California, Arizona, Texas and Florida.
3 It’s Official: Washington Redskins Are No More
Washington's NFL franchise will no longer be known as the "Redskins." As expected, the team has announced that it will drop the Redskins name and Indian head logo effective immediately. It's unclear when a new name will be picked, as copyrights are pending. The move comes less than two weeks after FedEx, the company that owns the naming rights to the stadium the team plays in, demanded the franchise to change the name. Other sponsors also asked the team to change the nickname as well. The team's moniker had long been decried as racist. The Navajo Nation calls this a historic day and their president credits indigenous peoples for fighting "long and hard" for the change. They're now calling on the NFL team to come up with a name that quote "truly honors and respects the First Americans of this country." No word when the team will reveal a new name, but it also hopes to build a new stadium and return inside D.C. city limits.
