Supreme Court Halts Texas Execution Over Religious Adviser

The U.S. Supreme Court is temporarily halting the scheduled execution of a South Texas man. Justice Samuel Alito approved the stay on Tuesday afternoon, saying it was up to a district court to determine if Ruben Gutierrez can have his own spiritual adviser in the death chamber. Alito told the Fifth Circuit to move quickly on the issue, but the lower court didn't make a ruling on Tuesday, so the execution is delayed 90 days. Gutierrez was put on death row for killing an elderly woman during a robbery in 1998.
