Texas officials are investigating the death of a black man in police custody who told officers he couldn't breathe.
Javier Ambler led police on a chase from Williamson County to Austin last year after failing to dim his headlights for oncoming traffic. Upon his arrest, body-camera footage shows Austin officers tasing him four times and Ambler informing them of his heart issues. His death was ruled a homicide and is still under investigation. The reality show "Live PD" says its video of the arrest has been destroyed.
Meanwhile, two Williamson County Commissioners call for Sheriff Robert Chody to resign. Commissioners Terry Cook and Cynthia Long made the statement in a meeting yesterday. Their call stems from the death of Ambler in March of last year while in custody of the Sheriff's department.
Cook and Long cite an investigation that began immediately to look into that incident. The probe is being led by the Travis County DA's office and Austin Police, who both claim it is ongoing but stymied by an uncooperative Sheriff Chody. In a statement yesterday, Sheriff Chody denied the accusation of non-cooperation, saying his department has always been willing to do so but has never been asked.
