El Paso Extends Coronavirus Emergency Measure Into July

The city of El Paso is extending the coronavirus emergency measure into July. Yesterday in a meeting, city council members voted to extend the emergency through July 8th. The El Paso Times reports that the ordinance provides some protection from evictions despite the fact the state supreme court lifted its eviction moratorium in late May. A landlord in the city can be fined five-hundred dollars for ignoring the city emergency ordinance. City leaders are encouraging tenants and landlords to negotiate payment plans. Under federal coronavirus law, tenants who receive federal aid to help cover rent are still under a federal eviction moratorium through August 23rd.
