House Hearing Probes Federal Response To Coronavirus Outbreak

A House hearing is exploring the federal response to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

CDC Director Robert Redfield is being pressed on the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. Testifying in a House hearing, Dr. Redfield called himself "deeply saddened" about the harsh impacts of the outbreak.

He noted the overwhelming impacts on communities of color and nursing homes. Redfield called the unprecedented crisis a "wakeup call." He said efforts to start reopening the country should be "cautious" and based on science.

Opening the hearing, Connecticut Democrat Rosa DeLauro said the federal response has been "inconsistent and incoherent." She accused the Trump administration of sidelining the CDC and putting "political expediency over public health."

There are more than 1.8 million confirmed cases of coronavirus in the U.S. and the American death rate is over 107,000.
