San Marcos May Ban Electric Scooter Services

The city of San Marcos may prohibit motorized scooter-sharing services while still allowing residents to use scooters of their own.

City Council on Tuesday unanimously passed the ordinance on first reading. If it passes on second reading, companies will be prohibited from deploying motor scooters on public property. Residents would be barred from using scooters owned by scooter companies, but would still be allowed to ride their own.

The ban on the scooter-sharing services was taken up as a public safety matter.

The final reading of the ordinance will take place on May 19.
