Protestors in the Iranian capital are demanding Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei step down after Tehran has admitted it accidentally shot down a Ukrainian jetliner with 176 people on board. Many of the passengers were Iranian students. Videos posted on social media showed demonstrators outside Tehran's main university and other locations chanting against the regime. Police reportedly responded with tear gas to disperse the crowds.
President Trump says he's closely following protests in Iran. Trump tweeted his support "to the brave long-suffering people of Iran" Saturday. He wrote, "I've stood with you since the beginning of my Presidency and my Administration will continue to stand with you. Trump added that he's inspired by their courage. Demonstrations broke out in the streets of Tehran today after the Iranian government admitted it accidentally shot down a Ukrainian jetliner. All 176 people on board including many Iranian students were killed.
Iran is blaming "human error" for the downing of a Ukrainian jetliner that killed all 176 people aboard. Iran's president called it a "disastrous mistake" on Twitter and promised a full investigation. Iran initially denied any involvement in the crash but admitted today it unintentionally shot down the aircraft with a missile. Ukraine and Canada are both calling for a full investigation, justice for the victims and compensation for their families.
