UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor has announced that he has added Will Stein to his coaching staff as the Roadrunners’ passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach.
Stein’s addition gives the Roadrunners nine full-time assistant coaches.
Last week, Traylor named Barry Lunney Jr. as associate head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, hired Daniel Da Prato (special teams coordinator), Nick Graham (cornerbacks), Julian Griffin (running backs), Jess Loepp (safeties/recruiting coordinator) and Matt Mattox (run game coordinator/offensive line) as assistant coaches and retained Rod Wright as the defensive line coach. Yesterday, Kurt Traylor was named UTSA’s tight ends coach.
Stein comes to San Antonio after spending the previous two seasons as the assistant head coach, offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator at Lake Travis High School in Austin.
During his two years at Lake Travis, he helped lead the Cavaliers to a 26-4 combined record and back-to-back appearances in the state semifinal round of the Class 6A Division I playoffs.
In his first year as offensive coordinator, Lake Travis posted 3,937 yards and 54 touchdowns passing and 2,578 yards and 31 TDs rushing, averaging 434.3 yards and 41.1 points per game.
In 2019, Stein’s offense racked up 3,877 yards and 40 touchdowns through the air and 2,776 yards and 43 TDs on the ground while averaging 443.5 yards and 42.6 points per game.
Prior to his time at Lake Travis, Stein worked alongside UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor on Charlie Strong’s staff at Texas in 2015-16. He served as offensive quality control and worked with the wide receivers.
Stein then worked with Texas’ quarterbacks for the 2017 campaign and helped the Longhorns win the Texas Bowl, their first bowl victory since 2012.
A former standout quarterback at Louisville, Stein got his coaching start in 2013 as a graduate assistant for Strong at his alma mater, where he helped coach the quarterbacks. When Strong headed to Texas, Stein stayed one more season with the Cardinals and became an offensive quality control coach, working with the wide receivers under head coach Bobby Petrino.
Stein played quarterback for Steve Kragthorpe (2008-09) and Charlie Strong (2010-12) at Louisville. He was part of the 2012 team that won the Allstate Sugar Bowl with a 33-23 victory over No. 3 Florida.
A three-time state champion at Trinity High School in Louisville, Ky., Stein still holds the program’s single-season record for touchdown passes in a season with 54.
