Decorating the Home for Christmas is Cheaper Than You Think!

There's that one home in every neighborhood where the owners go all out for Christmas, and hang lights from ever tree and eve.

The Clark Griswold wannabes decorations may look impressive, but it brings up thoughts about what that does to their electric bill.

Nora Castro with CPS Energy says, if they are doing it right, it's not as expensive as you think. The key, she says, is to use LED bulbs.

"LED string lights are great and they're more energy-efficient than traditional light bulbs," she says. "They consume about 70-percent less energy than incandescent lights."

And the numbers, she says, are shocking.

"With LED, it only cost $.27 to light a six-foot Christmas tree for 40 days, compared to $10 for incandescent lights."

Castro says the LED lights are more expensive up front, but the pennies they cost to use save money in the long term.

In addition to the savings on your bill, she says LED lights put off less heat, so there is less of a chance they can start a fire.
