Austin City Manager Will Investigate Resigned APD Assistant Chief

The city manager of Austin says he'll hire an outside investigator to look into claims made against a former leader of the Austin Police Department. Assistant Police Chief Justin Newsom abruptly retired a week ago. The probe will look into a complaint that Newsom used racist language, and that no action was taken afterward. City Manager Spencer Cronk on Thursday told Mayor Steve Adler and the city council that he plans to get to the bottom of the matter and will take appropriate action.
