A bipartisan group of Texas lawmakers are pushing Governor Greg Abbott to give a reprieve to a man set to be executed this month. The lawmakers sent a letter to Abbott today saying there are multiple concerns about Rodney Reed's conviction and believe more testing needs to be done on evidence. They also cited new witness statements and are worried killing Reed will erode the public trust in capital punishment and Texas justice.
A group of celebrities is also requesting a reprieve. Kim Kardashian West, Rihanna and Meek Mill are among the celebrities who are urging the Texas governor to stop the execution.
Reed, who is now 51, was convicted of killing Stacey Stites on April 23, 1996. His attorneys believe Stites' fiance actually did the murder. Reed is set to die November 20th.
